Each year between late January and March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains host one of nature's great spectacles: around half a million wildebeest calves are born in just a few weeks.
Why it's special
The sheer concentration of newborns creates extraordinary, fast-moving game viewing — and draws lions, cheetahs and hyenas in unusually high numbers.
Where to be
The Ndutu area, straddling the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is the heart of the action and the best base for these few magical weeks.
