The Usambaras are a world away from the savannah — cool, green mountains laced with footpaths that link Wachagga and Sambaa villages, viewpoints and ancient rainforest.
The walking
Routes range from gentle half-day strolls to multi-day point-to-point treks staying in simple guesthouses. The 'Irente Viewpoint' walk above Lushoto is the classic introduction.
Why go
It's the perfect, low-altitude counterpoint to a safari or Kilimanjaro climb — green, gentle and deeply local, with a fraction of the crowds.
